My Netflix Movie Review: The Fighter

“Academy Award nominees Mark Wahlberg (The Departed) and Amy Adams (Doubt), and Academy Award winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River) star in this remarkable film.  Based on a true story, two brothers, against all the odds, come together to train for a historic title bout that was the power to reunite their fractured family and give their hard-luck town what it’s been waiting for: pride.  Micky Ward (Wahlberg) is a struggling boxer long overshadowed by his older brother and trainer, Dickey (Bale), a local legend battling his own demons.  Their explosive relationship threatens to take them both down - but the bond of blood may be their only chance for redemption.”  Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal

General Movie Info:
Genre: Biography, Drama, Sport
Plot:  Boxer Mickey Ward battles professional and family struggles in his attempt to make it as a professional boxer.
Rated:  R

My thoughts:
Mickey Ward is a real life Rocky Balboa!  I first became a Ward fan after watching his epic battles against Arturo Gatti.  While this movie doesn’t include those fights it still delivers a solid punch.  The movie received a lot of hype and recognition at the Academy Awards and rightly so.  It totally lived up to expectations.  Wahlberg does a good job portraying Ward but Bale’s performance of Dickey steals the show.  This movie is a must see ~ you should put it on your Netflix queue.
