“If you want to make enemies, try to change something.” ~ Woodrow WilsonIt seems to me that most people are content and generally happy simply maintaining the status quo. Both at work and in their personal lives, people tend to be happy following their daily routines and letting the rest of life blur. What they don’t realize is that with or without their awareness or active participation, change is inevitable and constant.
“Know what's weird? Day by day, nothing seems to change, but pretty soon...everything's different.” ~ Calvin from Calvin and HobbesSure, some like the “idea” of change but very few want to truly act differently. Actually, the “idea” of change is widely accepted and frequently embraced. President Obama (like many other politicians) ran, and won, almost entirely on the promise of change. Many politicians make vague promises of improvement through some mystical change. What isn’t explained is that to achieve the desired change, citizens would need to change their own actions. That kind of change is not easily accepted or embraced.
Young people are generally cooler than older people. Without trying, they are naturally current in every aspect of their lives. Youth doesn't give them any other option! How would you do things if you didn’t already know how to do them? For instance, if you didn’t know anything about hair styles, and needed to style your hair, after researching hairstyles would your hair still look the same? Probably not, that’s why you work with ladies with 70’s Farrah Fawcett hair and you see that guy at the mall who still has a mullet.
"Just because everything is different doesn't mean anything has changed." ~ Irene Peter
Sure the guy with the mullet might not have kept up with the hippest fashion trends, but that might not be his priority. Each person needs to determine what their priorities are and make sure they are doing everything they can with everything available to meet those priorities. If it’s a priority then you should act accordingly. Don't just do things a certain way just because that’s how you've always done it.
“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” ~ Andy Warhol
“Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him.” ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
To improve personally or professionally, you need to accept change and use it to your advantage. Change is easy when it is only in theory, or for someone else, but to really improve you need to change YOU!
Great post! Here's another great quote on change, specifically with regard to changing other people. It supports the idea that change is easier said than done.
